keeping humidity up

aligoonbaba Apr 15, 2004 11:46 PM

Ok, I have my columbian redtail in a 20long with jungle bark as the substrate. He has a bowl of water and I missed him several times a day, heavely. He is in the middle of shedding right now, and i can't seem to get the humidity to 80. It won't go much above 70 and it doesn't stay there for long. Within an hour it's back down to 55. He does have a heatpad creating some heat. How do I keep the humidity up in his tank? The room he is in is quite cold, that was my first guess, but I'm not sure. What do I do? thanks in advance guy =)

I use a clay flower pot... soak it in water, and put it in the cage.. works great

If it is humidity you want, then get a terranium humidifier at petco for $20.00,I have 2 of them. 1 is used for my blood python and keeps it around 70%-75% always. It puts fresh humid air into the tank so it doesn't get stale. You need to buy a high LPH aquarium pump to go with it,but from what I have seen,it works pisser. To keep humidity in you need to close up the top a bit with some type of plastic ,as this helps keep the condensation in and just drip back down into the cage.Wood and cardboard just absorb it. Don't completely close it off as this is just as bad as not having enough humid air in there. But with this pump,I have only about 3/4 of an inch gap at the top of the tank I am using now,and he is as happy as can be,not to mention easy sheds.Hope this helps...

Hey if you just want to make your little redtail get a great shed without all the tough work of trying to keep humidity in a screen top tank. You could just soak your little guy in a bath for about 15 minutes a day and i bet that he will have a perfect awesome shed and no problems... it works for Steve and myself before we had the rack system and the ability to keep the humidity up. The terracotta pot idea works awesome too... but you will still have to soak that thing at least twice a day but your little boa will love it, we use that trick too and its a great awesome trick also..

Good luck with the shed

Here are several things you can try. The first two will probable work best.

Use plastic to cover most of the screen top
Use a towel that is wet go cover most of screen top
Use a larger water bowl
Move the water bowl closer to the heat source
Try a humidity box with damp (not dripping wet) paper towels or moss
Get a room humidifier

Good Luck,
Jeff
