Guess who's gravid?

pepe15 Apr 16, 2004 12:54 AM

ME! Ok, so it's not a dragon, but it looks like I have been incubating this one for 5-6 weeks already! So, for those of you that are going to stick around the forum until around Jan, I will post pics of the hatchling when it arrives! This is my first!

Quick question, in all of the reptile books I have read, it says that when you are pregnant you should not handle reptiles...is this true? Don't you just need to be extra careful with washing your hands?

There are a lot of things you shouldn't do when you are pregnant. Most of those "rules" were written by the over-cautious. Take some extra care in cleaning up and I can't imagine there being a problem. We have 6 rugrats and I have had reptiles the whole time. The only difference I noticed was two of them were born with scales and one of them sheds every month.

Congratulations!

Just use extra care when washing, etc and things should be fine.
The main "issues" are after the baby is born and if you don't keep up on a good hand washing routines, etc.

Also, just to be even "safer"... never feed the baby wearing the same shirt you were when you last handled your dragons. (That is if you allow your dragons to climb all over you LOL)... Then again, you have quite a wait till you have to worry about those things

LOL, I am due in July, having a boy. I haven't changed anything really, I still handle my reptiles, I just wash my hands after just like I normally do. Make sure you get fecal tests done, because there are some parasites that can be passed to humans. The advice about the baby is good too, I will keep it in mind when the baby gets here!

How exciting! For both of you. January is my nieces birthday, my birthday, my son's birthday and my foster son's birthday. Actually I think I have a cousin who has a birthday in Jan. too.
Good luck ladies and take care,
Karen
