Help choosing a Horned Frog

sharib Apr 16, 2004 01:00 AM

I have fallen in love with the Horned Frog. They are so cute! I have to have one. I have been surfing, reading up and researching them for days. It's all down to picking out the frog now.

I understand there are about 5 different varieties - 2or3 commonly available. Unfortunately I cannot find adequate information on the differences. What I have been able to ascertain is that most differences are in appearance only. But, I can't seem to find any pics of the differences. Does anyone know of any links to sites that show the different HF varieties (side-by-side preferred)? Any pics that compare froglet coloring and markings to adults?

I would prefer to purchase a small froglet so that I can watch it grow, and one that will stay fairly colorful as an adult. Is this possible? If so, Which variety am I looking for?

I have seen pics of some very brightly colored froglets. What do these look like as adults? Do the bright yellow and orange froglets stay that bright as adults? What about the bright green ones? I have seen brightly colored green adults (none of the yellow and orange though) and some very drab looking adults. Is there any way to predict which babies will stay brightly colored?

And finally, where would you recommend I purchase a nice healthy froglet? I have not seen any in the local petstores (at least none in the stores I would purchase from). Is it safe to buy on the internet and have them shipped? I have recieved shipped snakes with no problems....

Thanks for your help.

Do you mean color patterns with varieties or do you mean species? I would say that the frogs usually look the same in color from juvenile to adult. The yellow/orange ones are usually albinos from the species C. Cranwelli. There is also another species commonly kept called C.Ornata. I've personally never (what I know) seen an albino Ornata. Anyone know if there are albino Ornatas?

Thanks for the response CokeOfMan,
Yes, you are right I did mean species not varities. Sorry for the confusion, I know better.
The two species you listed - Ornata and Cranwelli are the two I have seen advertised most often. I have seen different varieties within these two species (green, brown, albino). I do not know what these are going to look like as adults.
What does a green Ornata look like as a froglet and as a muture frog? What about the albino Cranwelli?

Thanks
Shari

Here's another pic of him. Albinos are the best Cranwell's, in my opinion.

My Ornata has been the same color (I think) from the day I got him untill now. I've had him for about six months, and he was about two inches when I got him. I don't see much difference from a young and a adult frog, except for the size difference.

Good Luck!

Wow your guy is huge. I have had mine for about four months now, but he has not grown much. When I bought him at the pet store they told me he was accually a year old (also told me he was very similar to a green tree frog, but that's another story, LOL). I really didn't believe them about his age, but now that he is not growing much (if any) I'm starting to think it maight be true. He is about 2 inches at the most and not very fat at all, well for a horned frog. Here is a picture of him about a month ago, he is my little devil. He almost got my finger a couple of nights ago
