night time heat

mastino177 Apr 16, 2004 10:14 AM

I know that the temp drops at night in the desert...but for my very small and young mali should I add a black light or somehting else?

I use a zoo med heat pad that goes on the outside of the bottom of the tank. It sticks to the glass. I put it directly
under the hide out. This way it doesn't get too cool for my uro.

hi, if you are going to use an under-tank heater (which i do) and your substrate is light (millet, finch food...), you will need to place a repti-carpet inside the bottom of the tank. so as to protect from burns from the very hot glass. i have mine setup this way and my mali really likes it. it keeps his hide nice and toasty! i keep the pad on 24/7 and check the temp frequently. also stick the pad on more towards the hot side, this way you still have a cool side. be sure to stick it exactly where you want it because once stuck it cannot be removed. if you peel it off it is now no good. hate to waste the $$$ spent on it. good luck with what you decide!

I was thinking more of a black or red light. Is that okay?

a night-time heating source is always good. a black or red light should be o.k. as long as it provides the necessary heat. placement of the bulb should be towards the hot side of the enclosure. good luck keeping your baby warm.
