Snake collecting ethics..do you have any?

LamproMan Apr 16, 2004 01:43 PM

I was just wondering what folks opinions were on collecting wild kings. Not judging, just asking.

OK - most of us are going to jump on any one we see, but..

Do you bag each one you see?

Or do you release it if it's something similar to what you have or something you have enough of?

Do you sell them to pet stores?

Do you cross between sub-species or just within a ssp. or with snakes in an area where ssp. intergrade?

Finally, how many should you bag in a year (you can't predict what you're going to find, but...)?

And lastly, should you collect in the same county/locality year after year even though the kings maybe in a different area?

No...I've released a few EKs I've found over the years. I don't find that many either.

Never. I believe people do this for a quick buck. Go out and get a job and make money instead of selling all these WC snakes. Most of these people have no care for the well being of the snake. They just want to sell it quickly so they can make money.

Since I only have Eastern and Apalachicola Kings, I breed my locality EKS together and plan on doing the same with my AKs. Since the two naturally intergrade, I may breed a AK with one of my female EKs this year since I do not have a mate for her. I'm very interested in seeing what the offspring look like if I do.

If I found 10 AKs this year and they ALL looked different, I don't know what I'd do. I know that's not going to happen though so I guess I won't worry about it. But if I found 10 EKS, I'd probably only keep a couple that are exceptional looking. I really like the wide banded ones so I would keep those.

Not sure what you mean. If the kings are in a different area, how you you find them in the same place you found them last year?
