From what I've heard from different owners, not all Uros burrow and its not a necessity that they do. Some burrow when stressed or need to hide and I imagine some do it just for fun. Anyway, I wouldn't think you'd need to encourage yours to burrow. If he does, fine, if he doesn't, fine.

Anyone else have a say on this one?

it all depends on the substrate though. good dirt, bad dirt, goofy dirt, sand, it is not interchangeable.

water content is also important. so you gotta have the right soil (and our "Home Depot" mix is a good place to start, because i know it works, and it will show you what you are looking for in a good soil), and the right water content.

too dry, the animals won't burrow. too wet, the animals won't burrow. just right, and off they go, digging till the cows come home.

a new point to think about as well...

when the animals burrow and make tunnels, they start doubling, tripling their usable cage space, you "dig"?
