Ornate from Marathon, TX

rpelaez Jun 14, 2003 10:50 AM

This is an Ornate from upper Chihuahuan desert habitat. The specimen may be in a Desert/Ornate intergrade zone, however it has all the coloration and characteristics of being Ornate. I picked it up while on my Texas vacation and decided to bring it back home for my kids. So far, she has shown a liking for assorted large beetles, crickets, superworms and pinkies. The only vegetation I've offered it is colored greens from a pre-packaged salad blend that I eat. Anyway, my question is how much and how often to feed her to maintain optimum health? She always seems to be willing to feed no matter how much she eats.

Thats a good question, and one i wish i could answer better.
My brother has an ornate box turtle that his friend had captured a few years ago, and was not taking good care of.
She eats like a pig, and we normally feed her quite a bit.
Last night she ate a superworm salad, along with 10-14 12" crickets.

-- its not a very good idea to capture wild reptiles for a pet, i have to add. Some do not acclimate well, and of course there's the parasites that you're almost guarunteeded are camping out on your turtle--
