Lost a toenail...

aseret Apr 16, 2004 02:45 PM

Puff lost a toe nail. Rear right leg, toe closest to his body. It looks like he snagged it on something. The clear part didnt come off, but the entire dark part did. There is a little blood, but really barely anything. The vet, when I called, said I should bring him in. I was wondering if this happens often, and what I SHOULD do? Is there something I can put on it? Neosporin or something?
Thanks!

my rankin's beardie hybrid lost a toenail a while back. i saw that it was looking funny--sticking straight out instead of curving down...i was a little worried about it, but his toe seemed fine...

...so then one day it was just gone! the whole thing! healed up nicely, no problems whatsoever. i wouldn't worry about medicine or anything...i wouldn't worry about it at all. i don't know what the vet thinks he's going to do for it.

good luck,

amanda

It happens. If it's actively bleeding try a little corn starch to stop it. If it's stopped, any of the antibiotic creams so that it doesn't get infected. I really can't think of a reason to go to the vet for a broken toenail, just clean it up real good and treat it like you would any cut.

Thanks!! Yeah I was afraid that it might get infected. I have some neosporin to put on it. It looks like it tore off sideways, and tore a scale next to his toe nail. I will just keep it clean and keep neosporin on it.
