Why does my Mali go nuts outside & will he be like this when i get dirt for his cage?

UroJade Apr 16, 2004 06:25 PM

i was nice out so i took the beardies out for some sun, than may mali Ikki was scratching the glass like a maniac when i came back in so i though a walk might do him some good, get him some sun and maybe tire him out after he explored for a bit
but he just took a minute to look around than started trying to run everywhere and tryed to bite me when i picked him up to make sure his leash wasn't getting tight. after that he was calmer and just looking at things and going under things
at one point he wedged himself under the walkway border and we had to dig him out.after that i brought him back in.
normaly he's a very calm, eat out your hand climb up your arm to get carried around the house sorta guy. i assume its just his instincts kicking in but will he be like that when i put dirt in his cage?
also he got dirt in his mouth when we were digging him out because he was trying to bite us i wiped what ever was in his lips away but he wouldn't open his mouth for me to get past his teeth and i didnt want to force it open so i left him alone
is it going to hurt him to eat it, its was sandy soil with little grass roots everywhere in it
i dont think i'll be taking him out side much anymore or at least i wont let him near anywith i cant pick up to get him out.
i'll put up the pictures my sister took of him lodged under there later the camera wont co-operate

One of my malis also goes crazy outside, she will start hissing, tail thrashing, and pouncing at me trying to bite, this usually goes on untill she gets back into her cage and then shes calm again. I have a feeling this is just wild behavior from being in the fresh air. Mine also get little stripes by her eyes when shes in this mood its like uro war paint.

Naturally uros have to look out for birds. So when you take them outside and they see a bird or a shadow they get very scared and they will attampt to hide or stay perfectly still. One of my uros does this. Also my beardie freaks at the shadow of the cieling fan. But my other uro is too stupid to notice.

a number of reptiles will have this behavior when first exposed to the "outside" or even direct sunlight. the smell of "freedom".

dirt in a cage would be nice, and reduce stress levels, but it won't smell like freedom

I had my beardie outside over the summer during the huge blackout thing (probably going to happen again this year, seeing as how they didn't fix the problem). He wasn't really "wild". Actually, I don't know how to classify how he acted. It sort of wierded me out a little. He sort of kept looking around like he was scared and wouldn't let go of me. He was clutching the chest of my shirt like a mad man, and when I tried to set him down, he tried to climb up my leg. I guess maybe he sensed that it was all open air above him, which probably seems pretty dangerous. Maybe he heard birds or something? That could also possibly explain the uromastyx behavior that people seem to be experiencing. Maybe being outside in the open, and vulnerable to birds and everything puts them on a high guard? All I know is the lady next door started mowing her lawn, and my beardie wanted no part of it. He puffed up his beard and turned it black until I decided to put him back inside.

These crazy reptiles of ours.

Also, no, dirt does not smell like freedom. It doesn't taste like it either (....curiousity got the best of me, I wanted to know if Sam would be tempted to lick it before I put it in her cage...let's just say if the only reason a lizard will ever lick it is because it tastes good, I don't think we'll ever have an impaction problem with it). I'm still trying to dry it out a little and get some new stacks built before I give it the good old test drive with my uro. The top on the rubbermaid container it's in was clear, and there was some pretty good condensation on it. It's starting to dry out now, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to try it out and give you my REAL opinions on it.
