SHREDDED ASPEN! Is it a good or bad thing for balls? Who uses it and what does everyone thnk about it PLEASE I dont want to harm my ball!
some use aspen........some use newspaper......some use cypress mulch......some use carpet......some use paper towels......use what you like best......but most importantly.....use the net.....lots of caresheets EVERYWHERE........
Everyone sorry for all of the "aspen" post. I am just very determined to find out everyones opinion! Is SHREDDED aspen a winner in everyones books (for balls). Is Shredded aspen the same as aspen chips? Pros and cons?
Shredded packs down, and will not stick to food items as easily as the chips, but both work great.
Use what U like,
Chad
Aspen is good & safe, (even if you feed on it and they eat some) but it will dry your Balls out if your humidity is too low. Just mist your snake every couple of days, and it will be fine.
I have had everything from Taipans to Hognose snakes drag their food thru water onto aspen, and literally eat mouthfulls of it, (they are all still perfectly fine) only to crap it out.
If anybody has had negative results from using it, I'm sure we would hear about it.
Hope this helps,
Chad
Well I currently have my okeetee and snow corn, desert and banded king, mexican milks, Honduran milks all on it but me being a cautious keeper want to stray away from "chances". I had an adult female albino on it for a week untile I sold her so i had no time to see the effects. it is dry and i mist everyother day on ALL my snakes just to be sure. Thanks for all the post!
Wow, calm down, lol.
Aspen is a great substrate to use. I used to use it. But I went back to newspaper because it's much easier to cleanup, and does not get all over the house.

I have all my snakes on it. It is easy to clean (you don't have to move EVERYTHING to clean it, just scoop the poop, lol) The only thing is I personaly ALWAYS put news paper down underneath them when eating just in case. You can never know what really happens inside their bodies when they eat the aspen.
We plan on putting all the snakes (except the hognose) on news paper in a few months.

I know a lot of people use aspen with great success and I posted this before. A friend of mine had a Jungle carpet that was egg bound. He brought the snake here and she had died. Upon autopsy I had found she was impacted in her intestinal tract with a ball of shredded aspen she had ingested and was unable to pass. The eggs could not make it by this ball of apsen and she had died. This image still sticks in my mind when anyone mentions aspen. Just a story to share...
