common boa

mcompton1973 Apr 16, 2004 09:30 PM

is it just me or is the common boa not so common?
I love the clasic look of the boa.
not albino...
not snow, or salmon, or whatever else...
jsut a plain ole BCC or BCI

Thing is as I look around, it seems to me that EVERYTHIGN is het for this or some crazy morph.

I dont know that it matters....
and maybe it is jsut where I am or something...
but I just dont see many regular boas around.

I know what you mean... Its a little different for me. For years I have been on a morph kick... Every new morph just puts a smile on my face, and I want it...lol But here lately its the normals that have really been catching my attention. Especially the really clean normals, and with the breeding going on the last couple of years there are some REALLY clean normals out there.

Just my opinion

This particular problem is even more common in the Ball Python and Corn Snake circles.
The issue in the Ball Python realm is that every $6.00 import off the boat is giving a different title. The fact that the a Ball Python has a very variable pattern makes it east to describe each one different. There are some very beautiful Morphs out there, but not as many as being talked about.
With Corn Snakes, it is hard to get a normal “Wild Type” corn that is captive bred with pure genes. I breed a lot of corns each year and I don’t have the ability to produce wild type Corns with out wild caught stock. All of my breeders have 5 or more genetic morphs to their bloodline. It makes for a fun breeding project but I will never be able to “replenish” the wild Corn snake populations of the world, not that any private or commercial breeders ever due.
With the Boa Constrictors, the morph craze is not nearly as problematic. The Morphs are still relatively new and most breeders know what their animals are het for. However the Clean Common Boas that are mentioned in the post below are not wild type common boas. The clean babies being offered are products of selective breeding just as much as any of the other morphs. Captive Breeding programs are “Natural Selection” to the 10th power. Most breeders will not breed an overly unattractive animal, there is no market for it and therefore no profit. So only the most attractive animals make it to the breeders stock and therefore the animals themselves are not natural representatives of their locality or subspecies.
Just thought I would through my thoughts in.
Thanks
