Can't deside what to buy

magick-bears Apr 17, 2004 12:44 AM

Ok I have desided to get back into breeding leos on a small scale (1 or maybe 2 breeding groups). I am very intriqued by the Tremper Albino Giants and have desided to focus on these almost exclusivly (unless I find some outstanding Lavenders).

My problem:

I am working on a fairly tight budget. I am disabled and on a fixed income (so the leos have to at least pay for themselves after the first year or two). I intend to start with babies as these are less expensive. I plan to buy a Moose son for my main stud. I am at a loss as to the best females to buy. The way I see it I have 3 options:

1) Buying Albino Giants. Though this would be ideal do to my budget I would probably only be able to afford 1 or 2 females to go with my mal.

2) Buying Giants het for Albino. With this option I could probably get 3 to 5 females.

3) Buying Albinos het for Giant or Normals het Giant/het Albino. This would afford me the greatest number of females.

4) Invest in CA State Lotery tickets and hope to win a million $$$... NOT

Could anyone give me some ideas on wich direction you would go in. I would like to purchase in the next couple of months.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi

Go to kinsnakes classifieds and look at Lanse Padons post, of which are the first two listed. Look for the heck of it. He is selling het.s for $10.00 on one and on the other he is selling geckos for $5.00 plus shipp.

Buying gecko's hopeing to get your money back in a year of two is a waste its not gonna happen unless u have some ultra rare high end animals. Buying 1 baby gecko by time it is old enough to breed you have payed for it over and over again with food and proper husbandry heat, food, incubator etc...... Alot of people are tight on money me included IF I was you id get a pair or a trio and leave it at that more is not always better.. But with the trio you can breed them get babies and your collection will grow without buying more animals.

Thanks for the reply.

Just to clarify I don't plan on recouping all expences and turning a profit in the first year. I was more refering to getting back what I had paid for my initial breeders. This is not my first venture into breeding. From 1980 till 1999 I owned and opperated a commercial exitic animal breeding facilaty. This included a large Leopard Gecko colony. Of course back then we only had Normals and High Yellows. Glad to see all the new morphs that are around now

This is also one of the reasons I plan on focusing on the Giants. With them being the newest morph as well as the potential they hold. I forsee them holding their value for a number of years to come. Of course the most important reason I am focusing on them is that I really like them

Thanks,
Jeff
