AFT Stripes - Genetic or No?

misswindom Apr 17, 2004 07:40 AM

Are the stripes on an AFT genetic? I'm considering buying a striped, but I'm still just learning about AFT genetics (my thing has been leopard geckos!).

So if I cross a Genetic Stripe male with a Genetic Stripe female, I'll get a Genetic Stripe baby, right?

What if I cross a Genetic Stripe female with a Plain ol' Normal male?

I hear that if you cross a striped with a plain you get rainbow colors.

misswindom Apr 17, 2004 06:29 PM

LoL Rainbow colors, eh?

Am I to assume from your name (antonym...) that you're always contrary?

So what's the percentage rate on the babies?

I know that if I were to breed a patternless leopard gecko with a het. patternless leopard gecko, then the babies would be 50% Patternless and 50% Het. Patternless (but normal).

Is that what you were trying to explain, how it works with AFTs?

Stripe in AFTs is a simple recessive trait, just as are patternless, albino and blizzard in leopard geckos. So, the percentages of offspring would be identical when crossing hets/normals/homozygous adults.

Okay, thank you!

So if I cross a normal AFT with a stripe, I'll get normal AFT babies that are het. for the stripe, right? Sorry.. I just wanna make sure that I'm not confused at 5:44 AM...

Make a punnit square, problem solved.

misswindom Apr 19, 2004 11:25 PM

LOL no, it's not.. Because you have to know what phenomes are affected by what genomes, what genomes are affected by genomes, yada yada yada... That much I learned trying to find out what happened if you crossed a Blizzard with a Patternless... (Leopard Geckos, that is)!!!
