Small Turtles

deejay17 Apr 17, 2004 09:48 AM

I have a friend you would like to adopt a turtle, but he doesn't want an RES. He wants an aquatic turtle that will stay small around 2-3 inches. Can you give me a couple of species so that he can research them before adopting? Thanks

Spotted turtles, muds and musks all stay in the 3-5 inch range. Spotteds are pretty expensive, but he should be able to find a mud or musk turtle. That doesn't mean they can live in a 10 gallon tank their whole life tho, you would still be looking at a 40 gallon breeder or larger.

Don't forget that you have to research your species, too. There are some muds, such as razorback, that get up to 6".
An eastern mud maxes out at around 4.5 inches, but it's harder to find captive bred ones.
