Hibernation in spring

steve49 Apr 17, 2004 11:38 AM

I recently aquried 3 three toes, 1 female, large and two males medium size. The person I aquired them from was keeping them in an aquirium with constant light, indoors. I live in southern california and my other boxies woke up two months ago. I put the new one out side in a 8 by 12 pen with one heat lamp. They immediately started digging, never ate, and now are deep in a whole. If I bring them out, they go back to whole and I assume back to sleep.

Is this normal? Is it healthy?

Any helt would be appreciated.

The boxie I rescued is doing the exact same thing. He appears to be healthy (no RI, etc.), so I've decided to just let him sleep and expect him to wake up on his own in a couple of weeks. I'm afraid if I continue to harass him, trying to get him to stay awake and eat, I'll do more harm than good, so I'm just going to hope for the best. My main concern is at this point is renal failure due to chronic dehydration, but he's been soaked well and I'm hoping he will be OK.
