Keeping male with female all year long...??

Chrysemys Jun 14, 2003 12:07 PM

Hey,
I recently built a large enclosure, 4ftx2ftx16in, and was wondering if it was ok to keep my male and female together all year long? Would it be better if I had 2 females instead of one to keep the stress levels down? Thanks for the help,
Chris D.

We keep some of our males with the females all year long with no problems at all. I think getting more females to put with him is a good idea. I house anywhere from 3-5 females per one male.

The female did get gravid at once but now that she isn't anymore, he doesn't pay that much attention to her. They both are very healthy and he doesn't harass her at all. If you are willing to deal with breeding attempts then you can keep them together. If you don't want to deal with potential eggs and hatchlings then keep them separate. My Pheonix is fine with getting Beanie gravid once, but other males may not be against having big families.
