Prolapsed Hemipenis Help!!!

ajd Apr 17, 2004 12:24 PM

Please help I have never had this happen before. One of the hemipenises is out. Right now I have him in a sweater box with some wet papertowels so that it does not dry out.

Tell me what to do.

AJ

Try soak him in sugar water for 15 mintunes and put him in moist cage. If you don't see any improvement take him to vet.

how come sugar water

hill4803 Apr 17, 2004 01:19 PM

shrinks the tissue.(remeber osmosis & diffusion stuff from your high school biology class? And you thought you would never use all that stuff!) Use powdered sugar or make sure the sugar is dissolved completely in the water. Use warm water...not HOT! You don't need much sugar, 5%-10% solution should do the trick. Good luck. You should also make a vet appointment to make sure everything is still well with his uh..."parts"

I see is this a very common problem. Also this is the first season this male has bred should I now breed him anymore. I have gotten 6 eggs out of his females and the females have some more on the way.

definitely use the sugar water.

how many females did you get 6 eggs from? you probably wont have to breed him to those females anymore this season. leopard geckos retain sperm and can usually have 6-8 fertile clutches in a season after breeding only once. i would definitely give him a break from the ladies, though.

i had a male gecko with a prolapsed hemipenes and i used the sugar water and overnight it popped back in...he is one of my breeders...haven't seen the problem since.

you should probably go to the vet, though. there are several things that can cause a prolapse including impaction. you might want to rule that out.

good luck,

I might be wrong to say this, but I would just leave him alone. This has happened to one of my males, I just let him be and eventually it went back in. Nothing happened to him or it, I knew he was fine because he still bred and produced babies with my females.

Maybe if it is still out for a few days you should go to a vet.

i suggest giving the gecko a nice, lukewarm soak (it is imperative that you keep the organ moist) and remove the animal from any small particled substrate (use paper towels). a qualified vet should be contacted ASAP.
