Noobie silly question

Tairo Apr 17, 2004 02:55 PM

Hey Guys I am still learning and consider myself somewhat of a beginner when it comes to breeding. The silly question is as follows:

66% het for something.

Does this mean it has a 66% possibility to have this trait

or..

It will contribute 66% of this trait to the clutch for his or her share?

Also is it possible to Be het not show the trait in one cluctch due to random odds and then show teh triat in a new clutch with same mate? Please excuse my ignorance, got my Reptile and Amphibian variants book on order at Barnes and Noble but it takes 6 weeks heh, hope the 70 bucks will be worth it. Thank you guys )

66% Het means that it has a 66% chance of carring the trait, it is the normal looking offspring to a het to het breeding. For example a het to het albino will produce 25% albinos with the last 75% looking normal. 66% of those normal looking babies will be het for the Albino trait, but you can't tell which ones are so they are 66% hets, the other 33% are normal looking with normal genes.
Yes it is possible for the odds to not be in your favor and produce a clutch of all normal looking babies from a het to het breeding. Happens mostly on small first clutches, once the numbers of babies go up then so do the chances of producing the desired trait.
Hope this helps.

Yes that does help alot. Ok so as in your example 66% of the 75% normal looking will have this trait. Do the 25% that do manifest the trait physically guarantee that they will carry the trait on or do they have a tendency to not carry the gene? For example are the 25% albinos also 100% het for albino? Or are 66% of the 25% het as a rule? I must be missing something, maybe when I get my book it will be somewhat clearer. Thanks again.

Yes, the Albino babies are 100% Albino. So if you breed an Albino to an Albino you will get 100% Albino babies, if you breed an Albino to a Normal all of the babies will be 100% hetero for carring the albino gene but all of them will look normal. It does get very complicated.....

Thank you ))

So if I breed my Hypo to an Albino I will get 75% 100% het for albino normal babies, 25% hypo babies?

It does seem to get complex.

Hypos are Co-Dominat genes which means when you breed a Hypo boa to a Normal Colored Boa you will get a 50-50 split on the first breeding. The Boas that are not Hypo looking are non-hypo boas. There is no such thing as a normal looking boa that is het for Hypo. Now if you were to breed your Hypo Boa to an Albino Boa you would get babies that are half Hypo and half Normal Looking. All the Normal looking babies would be Het for Albino and all the Hypo Babies would be het for Albino (Hypo and Albino together equal a SunGlow Albino). I could go on forever but it would bassicaly take you two generations (about 6 years) to produce hypo albino boas.
