Photo of an eastern garter I caught today...

Amanda E Apr 17, 2004 03:02 PM

Yesterday I went hiking and saw 2 garters so I decided to go out again today. Today I was able to catch 4 of them in a period of about 30 minutes.

To me this is incredible as last year when I was out herping I only saw a total of 3 snakes, a large female garter and 2 water snakes.

All of the 6 garters were about the same size, about 16-20 inches and all were males.

Anyway, this photo is of the second one I caught today. He calmed down nicely and stayed put long enough for me to get this photo.

Thanks for sharing. I'm sure you'll be finding some big females soon!

It's amazing how variable this species is.
Here's a Common Garter Snake from the West Coast.
