Unferitle eggs

Gunilla Apr 17, 2004 03:39 PM

My little female Olga is 18 months old. She just laid he second clutch of unfertile eggs (she has never been with a male). She laid 20 eggs March 30 - and today, April 17 she laid 17 eggs! All unfertile of course.

How common is it that they lay unfertile eggs this close?
Is there any way to prevent this “unfertile egglaying”?
It is not more than 16 days between the fist and second clutch… poor girl!

I am a bit worried since Olga hatched with problems with her joints. She is a very small female – only 200 grams and 14 inches long… I don’t want her to “waste” herself by laying all these unfertile eggs… I don't have any plans to breed her since she has her problems (but to me she is very special and I love her just the way she is! )

Ps. The pics below are from today - when she laid 17 eggs.

She's going through her cycle, she'll do this whether she's with a male or not. It's important to give her extra food and extra supplements during this time and afterwards. There was a thread a couple days ago on spading females. I didn't read it that close so I can't tell you exactly what it said, but you may want to look back at it and consider whether it's an option or not.

what do you use for laying medium>>

I use a mix of unfertilized potting soil, some sand and vermiculite for laying substrate.
