Haven't seen a Texas HL yet.........

reptoman Apr 17, 2004 05:22 PM

Lester, Jeff, Cable and others--as you know I've moved to Texas and there is a very strong population of Horned Lizards here. Last year, I saw my first HL on April 15th. This year has been inordantley cold, and lots of rain, and in spite of 80 degree days (with overcast) I still have not observed a horned lizard or scat yet. I also noticed that I was up to knee deep in wild flowers at this time last year, but they are much more sparse. I did notice that there has been a hatch of small grassshoppers (nymph type) which last year I suspected they feed on as well. The ant's are out so where's the HL's? Anyone live in an area where Texas Horned Lizards are found? I check almost every other day, in several locations. I will keep you posted, but so far I find this to be late in the season for their arrival. I have whiptail lizards and swifts, skinks, and anoles in my own yard here and they are out, I have caught several species of snakes and also observed a Western Diamondback a day or so ago, as well as a huge choachwhip snake that looked to be 7 feet or more long. I have caught many patchnose snakes and black headed snakes and blind snakes, so everything looks to be in full bore but I have no idea about the Horned Lizards. Granted last year was my first experience with these I'm sure you could find California horned lizards in full swing by now....I will keep you all posted when I finally observe one, also have friends with large properties in the country keeping their eyes open as well. take it easy all........

Hey L.,
I've heard from others and read in some literature that THLs are late risers. Usually late April to early May. They seem to like it hot (their preferred temperature is almost the same as FTHLs) the cool weather has probably been keeping activity down. Also I heard it's been raining? May and June is their mating period so hopefully they will be out full swing at that time.

Hey Reptoman,
Good to hear from you. You'll have to send us some pics when they do come out.

It's cold and raining here today too but last weekend was very nice. Here's a photo or two from the Angeles Forrest:
