Chameleon Problems

Chamic Apr 17, 2004 08:01 PM

There is something wrong with my chameleon. He won't eat, drink, climb and his eyes are always closed. He is still moves good around the bottom of the cage, but I am really worried about him. He is about 3 months old, the temperature is 77 degrees, humidity is 40 and above, I spray 2-3 times a day. Can somebody tell me what might be wrong? He also doesn't have bowed limbs and his eyes are alittle sunken in and when I touch him, he gets mad. Please help my baby boy!

Please tell us a little more.
What type of chameleon is it? Is it wild caught or captive born?
Since when and how long ago did you start noticing such behavior? Have you recently changed his environment?

Failure to eat, drink and having eyes closed are not good indications and reflect health issues. Don’t touch him any more since this will only add to stress.

Although I haven’t seen him and I am not a vet, my only advice would be to be ready for the worst. Chameleons are delicate and the symptoms described more often than not are not good indications.

The chameleon is a veiled chameleon. It was captive born. It has been three weeks now.

I think it is difficult to suggest much without having personally seen the chameleon. The symptoms you give however, make it a delicate situation because a chemeleon that has his eyes shut and does not eat or drink is in trouble. A suggestion I can give you is that next time if you start noticing anything strange in behavior dont allow for 3 weeks to run before you seek some help. Probably the only thing you can do next is take him to a vet and see what he suggests.

Good luck.

He's been like this for 3 weeks? He's in serious trouble and may be beyond our help. When you say "temp is 77" what part of the cage is it, the basking spot? The cool spot? If this is the basking spot it is much too cool. If the cool spot it is about right. Is he in a tank or a cage? What type of UV lighting do you have? Please be specific as to brand...most are worthless. What are you feeding, gutloading with, what type of supplements do you use and how often? 40% humidity is a bit low for a baby. They can dehydrate very quickly. Also, the temp needs to drop at least 15 degrees at night, and NO visible lights should be on at all. He may be stressed by too much handling and disturbance. How much foliage is there in the cage? Can he hide from view? Is he being handled too much? We need a lot more info to help, but at this point you need a HERP vet ASAP. Good luck!
