i have a question

Espio-and-Lizzie Apr 17, 2004 11:13 PM

i think i found a great way to tame iguanas! my cousin told me about it-it makes ur iguana huge too-because his ig was 1/2 the size of mine and not healthy like 4 months ago and now it is a few inches bigger and alot healthier!!! he sleeps with his iguana in his bed with him. and i have been doing it w/ my iguanas and the one is losing all of the brown on his back and getting more tame. How is this possible (how does being out of his cage make him less stressed?) cuz brown means they are stressed no? lol well anyways he is so much more tame and he is alot healthier-i only put them in the cage to poop an dthen i bring them back out-can any1 explain y this is? answers will be appreciated

i wouldnt suggest that because you could crush your iguana.. and it wont make your igg grow faster either.. iggs are like people some grow faster and some get bigger...

Hi Nick,

I sleep with my iguana Green Guy (and my cat) and he is very big, healthy and extremely well-socialized. However, he is five feet long and maybe 20 lbs (and can hog the bed when he wants to). Yours look like juveniles. In my opinion they are much too small to sleep with quite yet. You might very well crush them, or at least break a leg or toe without meaning to. While I agree that sleeping with an adult iguana may be appropriate, your babies are still kind of little. I'd wait to sleep with them in your bed until they get bigger, and substitute gentle handling during the day. Most iguanas who are gently handled and interacted with turn out to be generally healthier (less stressed) and better socialized.

Are they housed together? That might be a cause of their stress. As they grow they should be housed separately. The bigger iguana will dominate the smaller one and prevent it from eating and the conflict will result in stress for both of them. This may already be starting since they look like juvies and not hatchlings (hatchlings can be housed together).

You can email me if you'd like to talk about your igs! I'd love to hear about them.

I sleep with Andy. lol. He has learned how to open his cage at night and get out and snuggle with me. Not something i approve of due to me having cats and him being right at 30 inches. But now that I have begain to get him out at night and sleep with him on a high pillow and a heating pad we have no problems of him getting smashed or eaten!

There's a risk of crushing the ig if/when you roll over, and a risk to you from renegade claws, tails, teeth, etc. if he gets spooked. And remember salmonella. Those outweigh any benefits. The changes you've seen may or may not be related to new sleep habits. They could be related to different lighting or heating. And most animals are less stressed when they're not confined. (I know I am!)

I agree with michaelB. I dont see how it would benefit the ig at all...especially the crushing element. It was a good thought, but i dont really think its a good idea. Nothing works better with taming igs than good old fashioned hard work.
