Green Tree Explanation

Tormato May 13, 2003 12:55 AM

This might sound super immature, but I want a snake thats meaner. I have Carpets and Bloods, and they were kinda snappy but they got tame in days, literally. I want a snake that is more work, more involved to bring it to a certain level of handling. I understand they are easier stressed, so I wouldnt overhandle at all. Just something more advanced I guess.
I was wondering if someone could give me a run-through on the locales..in terms of color, and temperment. I was holding a GTP the other day, and he was almost solid green. A lot of time I see GTPS with specs of blue or white. Not that it isn't pretty, but if I were to shell out 500 for a Green Tree, Id like to find the locale of a more solid Green specimen. Note* The pet store had no locale name for this Chondro*

Jayapura
Biak
Sorong
Wamena
Aru

Those are basically what I see for GTPs. Ive looked for site that break it down, but I havent found one. Any help would be istrumental.
Thanks a lot in advance
John

Amazon tree boas have generally bad attitudes and are much cheaper and easier to maintain than a chondro. They are easily the best starter arboreal snake.

Biaks are typically the nippy ones, but the patternless ones you see are typically Arus...obviously the less pattern as a baby, the better chance you'll have. That said, there's still no sure fire way that you'll get a Biak baby that will stay mean, or that you'll get a lightly patterned Aru baby that will turn solid green.

I have four ATBs that I can pick up without hardly ever getting bitten, so I can't say that an ATB would be a guaranteed "mean" snake.

I also have two Chondros, and they are no more difficult to maintain than my Amazons, as I keep both in the same type of setup, with the exception of different types of perches.

Sarongs, Jaya Puras, and most of the new mainland locales that you see popping up in the classifieds. Arus are also know to have quite a bit of blue, but it's usually mixed in under the white. Some biaks will have blue here and there, but not as vivid as other locales.

Thanks for all the info on GTPs. I like the suggestions, but the tree boa (s) is too ugly for my liking. I dont like those long heads and bug-eyes. Call me picky, but after all, reptiles are living art. I will definitely get an Aru. The snake doesnt HAVE to be mean, but just more intermidiate. I heard horror stories about Bloods, and that turns out to be folklore in my experience.
Note* I bought Sumatran Bloods for pure beauty, not wanting a bad attitude.
Thanks

There's no snake guaranteed to be mean (I have a very tame blood too), but when WLP's are mean... they're mean. They don't seem to stress that easily, either.
Otherwise, the only really mean snakes I currently own are a mandarin rat, a honduran milk, and a western diamondback.

Another one you could add to that list is Sri Lanka Pythons. They are the nastiest snakes I've ever dealt with. They aim for the face with almost every strike. Nice huh? A 9' 30lb. python coming at your face with a fliptop mouth. Somebody's gotta love'em.
