a good technic to feed a nervous krait??

dendrouranus Apr 18, 2004 08:32 AM

Hey guys,

i've to feed a b.flaviceps as he doesnt eat mice nor fishes.

i have some exprience with venomous but have never fed one.

My krait is quite agressive & very fast.

Considering the geometry of a fish's body, i think it should be easier to force one in his mouth. can fishes statisfy an elapid nutritive needs ?

and what's the best way to feed that MONSTER ??

thanks for your suggestion.

Try live food first - a small fuzzy would be a good food item to offer. Make sure the snake is healthy (check for internal and external parasites) and comfortable (right temperature and minimal stress).

If live food fails, try assist feeding the tubed snake. I suggest a nutritional concentrate such as Mazuri carnivorous reptile gel or Walkabout Farms carnivorous reptile powdered diet, reconstituted and fed through a catheter tube as a slurry. In a pinch you can use a single dose of high quality cat food (this can stress the kidneys) or Gerber meat baby food (not nutritionally complete) or put some mice through a blender and strain well for a smooth puree.

thanks for your answer,

but i wont have to feed him. He finally ate fishes as i wrote in the elapid forum.

Have you some experience to share about kraits. I obviously considered inexact informations related to their behavour & wasnt expecting to have to handle this kind of fast & flighty snake, i would be glade to hear advices from an experienced keeper.

I never had a Bungarus species that would not feed on mice or snake scented mice. I think Kraits are very easy snakes to care for, although some do die from neglect before being imported (some just never recover). I would not feed fish only, use snakes & mice too. Also keep a humidity box in the cage for them, I believe this will help to avoid alot of the longterm problems that they are known for.
