Anyone know what this is stuck in this snake?

Amanda E Apr 18, 2004 08:53 AM

I was taking photos of a snake I caught and realized that what I had previously thought was just a piece of old skin still stuck to the snake is actually something imbedded in the snake's body.

At first I thought it was something foreign, like a thorn, then I thought maybe it's actually one of his bones, that got broken and was forced through the skin.

Anybody have any other thoughts? It is extremely thin when you look at it from the side.

I'd like to try to help him, by removing it, but I thought that maybe I'd be doing more harm than good, especially if it is actually a bone rather than something foreign.

I have no clue! It could be a bone but I am not sure! Do you have a better angle?

A few posts down I described a shorthead garter snake that I caught to have a "horn" protruding out of the top of it's head. And come to think of it, it looked just like in your pic, but it was above the right eye. I have no clue what it is either but I'd be interested to know.

Well, I think you should remove it. Even if it IS a bone chip, he can't have it protruding through his skin. A bone infection could be deadly, so have it out, and then clean and apply tri-antibiotic ointment.

I was thinkin! It could be when it was developing and was going to develope 2 heads but it didn't fully develope. Just a thought

No offense, but I think that is the most absurd reply I have read on this board to date.

Really, I thought it was an interesting thought!!!

May have been interesting, but it was still pretty absurd. Two heads? Nice imagination, but I highly doubt that (what is possibly) one rib sticking out is indicative of a snake that had a second forming...Honestly...
