Best age for viable breeding?

hill4803 Apr 18, 2004 09:44 AM

I always wait until my leos are 1 year or older to breed them. I am noticing a lot of "proven breeders" that are only 8 months old. I don't believe weight is the MAJOR factor by which to judge sexual maturity in geckos but it looks like that is what some are using. I recently adopted a young pair that had been bred, but shouldn't have been. The eggs were infertile and it was difficult to get the little albino female back to good health. She looked like she wasn't going to make it for awhile. Anyone have opinions on breeding age for leos? What experience have you had with young (less than 1 year) breedings?

I go by the 10 month rule...my first try the first clutch was fertile...i was told 10 months on here and it says at least 10 months in the leopard gecko manual...with leos its really not important on the age as it is the weight i have a miinum of 50g as my point 40 is the recomended but the more weight the better they are after breeding

Ya, I've heard/read that atleast 50g and a year and a half will give best results. I have to babies now that are turning into monsters, so in about a year, I will try my luck.

I always breed my geckos when they are between 50-60 grams or more. I will also breed them if the are 10 months or a year or older.

I believe that if you wait until your gecko is older and has great weight on it, you'll get alot of nice healthy eggs out of her. I've heard some people say that they have bred to young, and could have waited until the gecko had more weight on it, but when this happens the eggs might not be all fertile and she might not give you alot. I'm not sure, I have never had that kind of expeirence, just what I heard.

I always want my geckos to be healthy and in top notch shape before I breed them.
