Crickets question

GreedyG2004 Apr 18, 2004 09:53 AM

I will be serving crickets to my gecko for the first time today because Petsmart ran out of mealworms. They are currently being gutloaded with FLuker's Calcium Fortified cricket quencher. Is this a good enough supplement for the crickets?

Also how many of these should a feed to my gecko? they arent big... the average is about a little less than a half inch long. My gecko is a little over 2 months old now and still greedy as hell.

ANy help is appreciated. THanks!

I use the fluckers gutload as well and haven't heard that there is anything wrong with it or that the crickets need more. currently my leo who is only about 4-5 inches eats 11-12 crickets a night and still wants more when she finishes them all. it really depends on how much your leo likes to eat. what you should do is put three in at a time and see how many she wants to eat. when she stops eating take out the leftovers, thats how i do it and haven't had any problems.

I think they need a separate source of food with that. They do make a food/water source combo thing...I think its called Orange3 or something like that...it's what I have now. I'm pretty sure the quenchers aren't gutloads or even foods though...

well thats nice to know. i was told that it is a food source so i just gave my crickets that. i never bothered to read the bottle I just assumed it was cricket food. well..... that stinks.what is a good gutload for crickets?

lostkauze Apr 18, 2004 12:12 PM

I give my crickets this cricket food from Grubco.com and I put in fish food flakes, they love those.

wel the jayr of stuff I have says "Fluker's Calcium Fortified Cricket Quencher". And the back says "Offers a source of calcium for "gut-loading" insects prioring to feeling them to your reptile" so I figured it was a good calcium supplement.

StinaUIUC Apr 18, 2004 03:47 PM

It adds calcium...but not much of anything else. You need to gutload them with something else...besides the fact that they still need food...

The cricket quencher is just a "drink" for the crickets. You need to gut-load the crickets before you feed them to your gecko. The gecko will benefit from whatever the cricket eats.

Go to my website and look at my gut-load page. Thats what I feed my insects before I feed them to my gut-load. I realize that you may not have alot or all of these things around your house, but if you gut-load is close, or somewhat similar like mine, or you have your own gut-load that will be fine.

Just make sure you have some protein in your gut-load. If you have cat food or dog food around the house, that will work, but grind it up.

hey i checked out your site for gutload food and was wondering do you put all of that into your gutload? may sound like a stupid question but up untill today i thought that the cricket qurscher was a gutload.

Leo Lover Apr 18, 2004 05:48 PM

Yes I put all of that stuff into my gut-load. I grind it all up in a coffee grinder so that its in powder-like form. I store it since there is alot of it, and I feed my crickets with it.

The cricket quencher isn't gut-load at all. Its a "drink" for them. The quencher just helps so that the crickets dont drown themselves in water. I give my crickets carrots for a water source. I dont bother with cricket quenchers. I dont think its necessary IMO.

If you want something easy like the quentcher, then use flukers complete orange cube stuff. I used it for quite a while, and it was great stuff. I stopped using it for a bit, to try out other options. But it's a good and easy feeding option for crickets. Try that link, it won't let me post it the other way. If not, just look up flukers orange cube complete stuff. I recommend it! As if that meant anything, lol.
