An out of tank experience that went bad

uromagnus Apr 18, 2004 10:46 AM

Hope someone can learn from my mistake.

Things have been goin so good with hand feeding, him sitting in my hand (in the tank) and us getting along in general so I decided to try having him out of the tank on my lap.

After reading all the posts and especially the one where the Uro jumped and got hurt I decided it would be the safest if I sat on the bathroom floor where there is no furniture to run behind etc when he would venture away from me as I expected. I even put a towel up against the bathroom door and made sure everything was closed.

Things were going very good and after a few walks around he was sitting on me letting me pet him. On his next run he went towards the vanity and I thought this was a good place to let him walk around. He played around and disappeared into what I thought was behind the cabinet door somehow.

What I never looked at was under the vanity just above the kickplate... there is a gap with access to the sub flooring !

Having no time to recover from my heart attack I grabbed a hammer and knocked through the cabinet bottom and with a flashlight was able to see him. The cabinet is 5' long so I was actually lucky that he was right there. After making the hole large enogh that I could reach in I was able to get a hold of him on the 2'nd try.

We are back to the usual here now 45 mins later... he had some dust on him but is eatting outta my hand and climbing on the wood already.

So... I hope someone can learn from my mistake and know that you can never check the security of an area enough ! As for Magnus... his trips to the bathroom for now will be to his basking area where he likes to 'go'.

Whoa. I would have just about crapped myself if one of my lizards got into a situation like that. I don't think I'd really know what to do right away. That's why I try to prevent incidents like that simply by being very diligent and watch full when they are out. If you are going to let your uro out to roam (something I believe is good for them, at least if they don't have a huge enclosure) you have to make sure to check every little knook and cranny before hand to make sure they either can't get in it, you can get them out of it, or you can put something in front of it to block off any entrance.

Better luck next time though.

thats a big thing that a lot of owners miss, I actually lost a hamster in my bathroom like that once, good thing she was a pig and came out to eat a carrot out of my hands.

I had a very similar experience with Joe. There was a gap in the edge of the counter that I could not see without lying down next to the toilet and turning my head sideways (yuck). He was in there overnight - there was no way to tear it apart without taking out the whole wall. I set up a basking light and laid out some endive. He came out in the morning for a munch and a bask.

I think he's cute, too! Yes, red phase Saharan. I got him from Doug Dix (WC) who said he was probably just barely adult, since there were no mating scars. That makes him probably about 4.

Thanks!
