How much should beardies eat?

kevinr Apr 18, 2004 11:11 AM

The differences in the amounts people seem to be feeding their beardies is pretty amazing. I have seen posts of 1000 crickets a week plus vegies and others ranging to 5 crickets every other day plus vegies. My assumption is thatin the wild these guys would be opportunistic feeders and eat everything they see in preparation for days with nothing. Is there any rule of thumb? I just want our pet to be healthy, growing a monster size reptile is not a priority. I currently am feeding pellets (about a tablespoon soaked in apple juice daily which he eats about half of), a platter of greens (he eats some) and bugs as a treat (every few days we throw in some dusted crickets, and feed him a few meal worms when we hold him). This is a far cry from a pound or two of crickets.

If your beardie is in good health, and a good weight, and eating all he wants to, I wouldn't worry. Its always specific to the animal, some eat more than others. It also depends on how big the crix are, what other things they are being fed etc. Sounds like your guy is just fine, I feed Doodle-noodle about the same, he eats more pellets, and I'm quite happy with his overall condition and weight.

It depends on the age and size of the animal. At first they eat very little. Their appetite seems to increases exponentially and they can be absolutely ravenous, eating 50, 60 or more crix at a time. Your diet sounds perfect for what you are doing. All the pellets he can eat and variety in other foods. Not that you need to, but it would be benificial for you to also gut load the crix and dust them with T-rex supps. Gut loading does not do much as they have teeeny tiny tummys but the dusting helps with the balancing of phosphorus:calcium.
