strange white chalky stuff....

animalchin Apr 18, 2004 01:30 PM

hello, in addition to perfectly healthy looking poos, my six month old sulcata seems to be going to the bathroom this strange white chalky stuff... sometimes it hard looking, and other times it's mushy. what could it be? his main diet consists of collards, spinach, and clover that he finds outside. once in a while he'll get a piece of strawberry but not very often... is it something he is eating? thanks,
gina

The white stuff is urates, which should be creamy looking and not hard. Try giving your tortoise more frequent soaks, and make sure it has a shallow pan of water available. Also, spinach is not a good food due to the high amount of oxalates it contains. Sulcatas need a diet high in grasses (the clover and collards are OK).
