Ahhhh.... The sarawaks! They are a local variety of Python breitensteini (Borneo STP) that are located in a remote region of southwestern Kalimantan (Island of Borneo) that occur only in what I call a "land Island" a geopgraphic region isolated from other nearby areas by major geological features such as mountains.
From a keepers standpoint, the Sarawaks are more curious and more deliberate in their movements sort of like a burmese python. I currently have two females captive bred from the founding stock hatched in 1999 by Chris Carmichael originally imported by Dave and Tracy Barker. I have another from Bob Garby that originates from slightly different bloodlines (same sire) that was hatched last year. I keep other stp's of different stock and the sarawaks are some of my favorites. Only topped by a 5.5ft dark borneo that is so tame he doesn't seem alive at times
Getting a sarawak however is very difficult. Bob Garby has a small breeding group and Kara @ NERD apparently has a pair. If I can get my male up to speed, by next season I will have 1.2 for breeding.
The photo is of the three varieties I have and the Sarawak is the one in the center. The darker one is my tame male and the lighter phase is Barker stock.

Hey,
Here is a map of the region which should help give you some idea, of where the Sarawak short-tails are located. Just over the Penambo mountain range, you can see Sarawak to the west and to the coast. I am not aware of Sarawak's being found anywhere in Kalimantan, unless Sarawak in it self, is used as a port of exportation hence the name. However, I don't believe that to be the case. Also, the two regions are governed by two different governments which would put the Borneo short-tails, on the Indonesian side of the island, and the Sarawak short-tails, on the Malaysian side of the island. Just my point of view.
