Tegu owners, please help

jtrott Apr 18, 2004 02:50 PM

I have had an Argentine Reg Tegu for about a year now and he hibernated for about 4 months. Well he finally woke up about a month ago and he has not eaten since he woke up. I have tried everything. His favorite food are live mice, he wont eat pk or ft, and dog food. I know dog food is not good for him, but it is his favorite little treat, but I can't get him to eat it now. Just a little background on housing. He is in a 8'X3'X2'(LXWXH) cage. He has a basking spot of about 120 degrees and an ambient temp of about 85. He has a big hide filled with cypress mulch and another shelf for hiding. He is given water on a daily basis and food, but he won't eat. Anyone have any insight as to why? He shed as soon as he woke up, and still refuses to eat. His tail is still plump but he is starting to loose a little weight. When should I start to worry?

Man you guys hit the nail on the head with the humidity!!!! My situation is slightly different. I just got a new B&W a week ago from St.Pierre by way of Underground Reptiles. He had been sluggish at the shop and when I first got him home. I think he was just coming out of hibernation. I raised his heat and had some humidity but obliviously not enough. After reading your impute yesterday I sealed Lackey's home better and really increased the humidity and you should have seen him chasing those crickets last night under his red light. Don't know how long the feeding frenzy went on last night but I had put almost 30 crickets in with him and I don't see many now.

Thanks again bosc13 and superchunk.
