Grrrrr... I am so frustrated

lizzylizard Apr 18, 2004 05:00 PM

I have been trying to set up my leo enclosure for a good couple of weeks now. I bought slate rock to use as my substrate to go on the bottom. I also bought sand to put in between the cracks of the stone and river rock to cover up the sand so there are no chances of impaction. While it may look ok, it's not, there are still so many cracks that the leos could get their feet stuck in. Does anyone have any sugestions for anything eles that could go in these cracks? I wish I had just bought slate floor tiles, but I could not find them anywhere. If I can't get this to work I'm probably just going to switch to paper towel, what a waste of money about $50 for all of it (slate, sand, and stones). Grrrr it's driving me nuts.

I did do that and they gave them to me for free as well. Unfortuately the ones that I got for free don't fit. I'm to shy to go ask them to cut them for me, lol. Plus I love the look of the slate, they didn't have any at the tile store. Thank you though, this week I'm going to a larger city, if I have time I'll look around for some.

try to stuff pieces of wet paper towl down in the cracks. When the towl drys out then it will swell up and seal the cracks..

hope this works!!!

I used this foam stuff that expands & comes out of a can. I used it for my boa cage to make fake rock (along with grout). Anyway...it will seal it up for you. You may have to do a little trimming when the stuff dries. I forgot the name of the stuff, but you can get it at home depot or lowe's for about $4.

It is "toxic" when it is wet. It cures in 1 hour. You could seal it with epoxy(I used grout sealant because I also used grout). ZOOS USE THIS STUFF FOR THEIR ENCLOSURES. It is spray on polyurethane. I have seen this stuff used to make waterfalls & water features in tanks with dart frogs & other amphibians. Amphibians are much more sensitive to "toxins" than leopard geckos. I would never put anything that is toxic in with ANY of my animals.

lizzylizard Apr 18, 2004 05:26 PM

Is it permanent? or is there anyway it could be toxic?

I don't think I want it to be permanent. Eventually I want to move them into my 33 gallon and I would like to be able to just switch the substrate.

Don't sweat the cracks or spaces. As long as they are not too big your leos should be fine. If you are really concerned, go to home depot and visit the wood flooring department and buy some "t" moldings. They drop right down into cracks and you have a nice smooth bump instead of an opening.
