keeping pacmans together

throatoyster Apr 18, 2004 06:19 PM

can you keep adult pacmans together? does it matter if it's a pair or if they're the same sex? i've got an adult pacman and i'd like to raise another one and keep them together when they're both full grown, but it seems knowing the sex of them when they're small is almost impossible and if it ends up not being a pair i don't want to have to keep them separate.
thanks!

you could keep two together if you want to risk having one or two dead frogs. Yes, frogs normally do calm down a bit in respect to their feeding habits as they get older. BUT it happens. One will try to eat the other. Even if the same size. Frogs have been known to choke and die while eating other frogs that are the same size or larger. Therefore, you end up with a frog that suffocated and one that died from wounds from being eaten.

yeah... i figured that would be what would happen. darn. out of curiosity, how to people breed them then?

Breeding is a tricky subject. It is stressful on the frogs. Sometimes they get eaten by each other. Sometimes they drown. It happens. That is why it is suggested that you do not breed your frogs if they are very important to you as pets. The trick is to heavily feed the frogs prior to breeding so that they are full and will not attempt to feed off of each other. Does it always work? I somehow doubt it.

One pacman frog swallowed another--two adults. The one swallowed seemed oblivious and the other frog was...dying probably choking to death. When the frog died it merely hopped out of its mouth (it could only swallow half of the frog).

I believe it is possible to overfeed these critters until they absolutely pop. So I even doubt feeding them a lot prior to mating would prevent this from happening. Man what a mess....

on Animal Planet's "The Most Extreme" it had them eating each other. don't quote me on it, but i'm pretty sure they were ranked number four on the varacious eaters list. it also said that they would literally eat until their stomaches tore.... crazy little frogs.
