Field herping in Southwestern Virginia...Sallies (ID please), and some newts mating...pictures

JP Apr 18, 2004 06:46 PM

Well, went out in Montgomery County Virginia to a place called Pandapas Pond. Found tons of sallies. I think they are all red backed salamanders, can anyone confirm this ID? Some looked a little different...maybe duskys? I've got lots more pics on my site linked below. Let me know what you think!

Finally, I caught several red spotted newts just below the surface of the pond. These two appeared to be mating. I had assumed that newts had external fertilization, but this looked for all the world to be a copulation. Its hard to see in the pictures, but they were vent to vent and tumbling around like crazy.

So in other words, you disrupted the newts in amplexus. That sucks, shame on you, lol you should get me some though. The others look to be red backed salamanders, but one looks to be a dusky, not sure though.
