getting a crested...

alexXx Apr 18, 2004 07:39 PM

hey all, i've been thinking about getting a crested and researching for awhile, and i was wondering if i could get a few opinions:

i'm a college student, so i don't exactly have that much space...what would be the smallest (decent) sized terrarium that i could keep a crested in? thanks

Well I wont go into what is the "smallest" acceptable. Being a college guy I am sure that you can find room for a 10 gallon aquarium. I would even recommend that you stand it on end so there is more height. Now we are talking about taking up a very small amount of room, and still providing a decent quality of life.

Hope that this helps

most definitely i can have room for a 10 gal to stand vertically...if thats a good enough size that would be great...i'm also looking at a 16x16x20 aluminum screen cage...would that be appropriate for an adult crested? and what about 2 of them? thanks again y'all

a 10 gallon is good for one adult.
a 10 gallon is 12x12x20 I believe.
You could house 2 adults in a 16x16x20.

Just make sure there are lots of hiding and climbing spots...and again, I would stand it on end if I were you.
That being the case think about how the doors would open if it were on end...Some are better than others as far as ease of use goes. Mine can be sneaky.

I would stay away from screen cages for cresites, they need high humidity. A 10G on its side would be great, go get one of those covers that has a door built into it to make accessing the inside easier. The most common setup I hear about for >1 crestie is to house a trio in a 29G, which is what I am doing.

I keep forgetting to find out where people live.

I livei n Nebraska. Here the general humidity in my home is about 70%. We just have high humidity here. If it drops much below that, then I run a room humidifier. By doing that, I can use screen with no problem as 70-80% is more than adequate humidity ( I think that 75% is about the average needed although some have great success with less)

My mom lives in Colorado. there her average humidity is about 15%. There would be no way to keep humidity at a good level in the room there, so if I was there, then I would say screen would not work.

So to revise my eaarlier answer....Screen works if you live where humidity in the room can be high enough...otherwise something more enclosed would be better for you.

I would go with something like a 16x16x20 screen cage or a rubbermaid of similar size. I keep and breed 1.2 groups in 24" x 16" x 12" tall Sterilites and they do fine.

As for what was said below about humidity, I disagree. My home stays at 30-40% humidity in the winter and I still only mist them once per day. Except for small babies (hatchling to 6 weeks old) anything over 50% humidity is completely unnecessary.
