Stunted Growth???

coolj9688 Apr 18, 2004 11:55 PM

Abou 2 months ago i bought a juvenile bearded dragon about 4 months old. It was realitivly skinny and refused to eat. I force fed it for about a month and it is now eating an average amount.(15 crickets a week, dragon is around 11 inches long and still skinny) Well my question is will this dragon ever get to a size where it can breed, if so will it be safe, and will it have healthy babies?

Thanks for the help,
Justin

I would say you probably should not breed it unless there is a miricle. For a dragon not to eat and grow there is something wrong. You may be doing everything "right" and still nothing so you have to look at some other alternatives. I have a BD that would not eat unless it was with other BDs in a large enclosure. I know of others that only want to live outside. You need to find what makes that animal happy if you want it to thrive.

What is your current setup like, what do you feed?

When i first bought the dragon i put in in a 55 gallon tank with 2 other juvenile bearded dragons. After about a week when i realized it wasn't eating, so i moved it alone to a ten gallon tank because i was concerned for my other dragons health(still their, been there for about 2 months). It eats mostly crickets and lettuce, although i have also tried super worms which it seemed to dislike at the time.

Thanks for the help

If you want your dragon to get larger and have a healthy appetite, (15 crickets a week is not a healthy appetite) put it in a larger home. A 10 gallon tank is not big enough. I have a male juvie about the same age, 5 months, and he eats at least 15 crickets a day, plus worms, plus salads. He is in a 3 ft. long enclosure and growing steadily, he is 15in.

Do you supplement the crickets or salad? If it's just plain lettuce you're giving him and not supplementing that's why he is not growing. Hi simply is not getting the nutrition he needs. He need greens like collard, turnip, etc. instead of lettuce. Lettuce is like feeding water, it has very little nutritional value.
