Should I keep both

ribbonlover Apr 19, 2004 02:10 AM

This weekend I caught an eastern garter and a western ribbon. Both are beautiful snakes. The garter is young, only about a foot long, and has attractive unblemished skin. The ribbon is full grown and is quite plump in addition to having a belly full of a very large meal. I think she may be heavy with young. I would like to keep both of them. Would both of them be happy in a 20 gal?

The better question is are you ready to support the young of the ribbon.

Indeed I am. Ive made preparations for neonatals, though I thought I would probably end up with garter babies. I find pregnant garters left and right.

Don't keep them together. Have seperate enclosures for each snake. Thamnophis aren't picky eaters usually, and other Thamnophis are certainly fair game.

It's generally NOT safe to keep ribbon or garter snakes with others of that family. Feeding accidents happen, resulting in cannibalism. Even if you seperate them to eat, they come back in smelling like their food. Don't risk it.
