FINALLY !!!! some babies

craig k. Apr 19, 2004 09:08 AM

I have been going nuts seeing all these great baby pics, knowing I had a bunch on the way. It finally started, at first I could only see 6 or 7 babies, I thought setrves me right for breeding her twice before she was three. Then I started moving papers and the numbers kept getting a little better. Final count 18 babies, 3 slugs, no stillborns

Much better

You said you bred her twice before 3... How old was she the first time you bred her? and did she produce viable offspring the first go around?

Last year I bred her and got 14 babies, one slug. She was not even 2 at that time. Here is a pic of one of last years babies, I am pretty sure I have seen a couple in this litter that are better. OBTW I do not need any lectures on not breeding females before they are 3, I do not make a habit of it.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I have a few questions....
How old was she the first time you bred her?
What was her size and her weight?
Have you bred other Young females before?
What did her first litter consist of?....how many babies?

How many other breeders have bred females this young?
Is it recommended?

NOT criticizing.....JUST CURIOUS!!!!

AGAIN CONGRATS

How old was she the first time you bred her?
She was about 19 mos when breeding, just under two when she dropped
What was her size and her weight?
she was about 4 ft. above average weight, but not fat. She also ate 4 times while gravid
Have you bred other Young females before?
No, not that young
What did her first litter consist of?....how many babies?
Her first litter was 14 neos one slug. The unusual thing was that it was 10.4 total babies, hope I have some more females this year. Small for columbian, but she is mostly central american.
How many other breeders have bred females this young?
Is it recommended?
I do not know how many other breeders have done it, as far as being recommended, most breeders do not. The only reason I did with her is she was very healthy weightwise. and I saw no risk to her.
I also bred all the other females that I bred last year, they all took. Many breeders give a year off. I have one female that dropped in August last year, she is due this June only a 2 month break between dropping babies and getting cooled down. She is looking very good also.

You say she's mostly central american, so did you breed a central with a colombian, buy her as a central/colombian cross, or are you just guessing that's what she is? Also, what was she bred with (central, colombian, etc)? If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to e-mail you and learn some more about this litter. Thanks.

The parents of my pair were one of the earlier super salmons and a very dark female central american. You can def. see the central in them, the normal babies from this litter look just like centrals, and they stay small. These babies are f2 possible supers, here is a pic of the male.

the Central American influence has much to do with your success with a female at a younger age and smaller size. (not that it hasn't been done with Colombian females) We are applying our standards and known reference points with Colombian boas to the much smaller and hardier Central Aamerican boa. I think the Central American boas will become more and more popular as people see firsthand the benefits of working with them. Congratulations again on a great litter!!!
