PLEASE..... I NEED HELP

03svtcobra Apr 19, 2004 09:21 AM

hey everyone, i just need a little help from you guys. i bought a male brb yesterday from the ny reptile show. i have a female as well. i am not keeping them in the same tankj yet. i will wait a few weeks make sure there is nothing wrong with the male first.

i did how ever just let them see eachother yesterday. the male rubbed against the female and i had no problems. well i did the today again and the female went to bite the male.

can someone help me out and tell me why this happened? i do plan on them living and mating eventually. do males and females normally get along.

the female is getting ready to shed though. she's turning that milky color. can this be a factor that they arent getting along?

also my male is very beautyful. he is about 2 feet long but i noticed he is somewhat more thinner than my female. is this normal? he ate 2 fuzzy mice yesterday when i got home from the expo and he seemed like he can go for more? should i keep feeding him until he stops eating or should i still limit it?

thank you guys in advance and sorry for the long post but i know the people on this forum are the ones to ask.

Steve,
. I would keep them completely seperated for a couple of months. Sick snakes can look healthy for a long time before any symptoms show up. I do not know why the female tried to bite the male. Tame BRBs do not usually act agressively toward other snakes.

thanks jeff.... she probably didnt wanna be bothered b/c they were fine yesterday. but only time will tell..

what about the situation with him feeding. he ate 2 fuzzy mice yesterday with no problem. like i said he looks thin to me.. should i feed him more?

also should i feed him bigger mice. when he ate the fuzzies they didnt even make a buldge in his body?

Steve,
. You can feed larger than those fuzzies but you do not want to feed so much that the snake is spending all of it's time digesting big meals. I would plan on a long term goal to feed a young BRB so that it grows an inch or a little more every month until it is 4.5 feet long. At around 4.5 to 5 feet in length they can become obese if fed too much.

Are you sure that the first one is a female and not another male? Males of most species of boas and pythons will show agnostic behavior toward each other when "in season". Just a thought. Bill

bill,

i dont know how to sex these snakes. if you know can you tell me.

i bought both at the ny reptile expo, and when i bought them, the breeder told me their sex. i am pretty sure its a female b/c i let them see eachother for about 2 min again and everything was fine. she let him lay up on her and everything which i hope is a good sign for time to come

Sounds like things maybe OK and she may have been startled due to the new arrival. Sexing these should be done by probing as even the tails on females can be long and they are difficult to just "eye ball" them.
