trying to find the little guys

dag_gekko Apr 19, 2004 09:35 AM

hey, i've been searching and searching for some thumbnail frogs. species i am interested in are the guys in the D. imitator, ventrimaculatus, fantasticus, reticulatus, and specifically D. amazonicus. so far my luck has only been on finding people that own some, but dont actually sell them..the other problem is that most of these people are not in the united states. so, my questions are: 1. does anyone know how expensive it is to buy and ship a frog from out of the country? 2. does anyone know of anybody in the country that has these frogs? thanks a bunch for any help~Adam

All of those are avalible in the US, but many have a six month to a year long waiting list. Have you kept darts before? These little guys can be a chalenge due to their size. Also they are not cheap: D. imitator start at about $60 each being the cheapest of your list and reticulatus run $150 to 200 at about the most costly. Find a post by Kyle and check out the breeders section on his dart links page, several of them breed these species. Also try the frognet classifieds. Someone had a post on there selling fantasticus not to long ago. Good luck.

If your going straight to thumbnails definately start with vents. There is a big difference between looking after someone elses thumbnails and taking care of your own. I personally wouldn't sell anything rarer than vents or imitators to a dart frog beginner. If you did find someone to get any of them from, you will be waiting at least 6months, probably a year.

If you are still looking at the updates on this thread here are some hints. First of all, I dont really recomend vents as I find them boring. All they do is eat sleep and breed. Most of the ones for sale are imbred. Imitators are great if you can find them for sale. Reticulatus are actually and easy frog to take care of as adults... it the babies that are hard because they need small food, and lots of it to make sure they eat. Amazonicus (sp?) are a little hard to find right now, and are just like vents.

Check with some of the people whos sites are below. Now checking with them means calling them or emailing them, not just looking at their site.

http://www.herpetologic.net/ - Breeds retics, and almost everything else
http://www.tincs.com/ - Breeds alot of vents including albinos
http://www.fantasticus.net/ - Used to breed alot of fantasticus, but thats slow right now, check them anyhow
http://www.saurian.net - breeds most thumbnails, but has long waiting lists

If you haven't already, try jumping on one of the waiting lists on Patrick's site: www.saurian.net. He has most of the frogs you listed for sale, although most have some rather lengthy waiting lists. Good luck!
