Got Eggs??? YUP!!

lele Apr 19, 2004 12:00 PM

Luna has a full load of eggs in her belly! A "guesstimate" would be 30 (that was from trying to count off the x-ray). She is fine in every other way so at least now I know what the status is - it was worth the $100.

On the trip home she rode free in the car for a short way. I brought her rope and she hung out! LOL! She's fine and I will be setting up her sunning cage as it is almost 80 degrees.

Good you know that for sure, Lele. At least you know what to expect.

What size cage are you going to set up for her sunning cage? I'm going to start getting those going for the ones that are indoors...

Hope all is well!

Hi Kristen,

Yes, finally! Now I just hope she does the rest of it "by the book"!!

The sunning cage for now was her first cage which is 18w x12d x21h (or there about). I use this when I raise my leps in the summer so I will have to get/make her another and will try to go much bigger. There is a saying in New England "if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes" b/c it can fluctuate so. yesterday this time it was nearly 80 and today it is 55. So for now I want something easily transportable that I can grab the whole cage and bring it in the barn if there is a sudden change.

How are your little ones? Did you see evilCham's pics of his/her new baby pygmies???

LOL - they are infertile ;-/ I made such a big deal about it b/c she was gravid (or so we thought) back in December and she has beendriving me nuts ever since! Having not been bred we had no idea of her actual status and was she going on feeding/not feeding binges. So I finally figured I had to know what was going on - at least I will know better next time!

well, the vet said 4 weeks after she stopped eating (which she has done 20 times since december! LOL!). She had one superworm about 10 days ago and that was it. She shows no interest even in her favorite waxworm - hope we don't encounter any difficulties!

Well good luck to you and Luna! ^_^

Hey Lele,
My females will usually claw at a cage corner or pace the floor kinda nervously when they're ready to lay. This is always a day or two after they've stopped eating. Good luck with her. Infertiles are harder to pass without getting eggbound. I'd send you a sperm donation from one of my guys, but it's a little too late for that.LOL
Get her nest box ready.

Hi Cricket, thanks for the info. The only place she has been "scratching it at the TOP of her cage! She hasn't done this since I first got her and it was b/c her cage was too small and she wanted OUT! Now she often hangs upside down - I thought maybe it was to warm her belly and get those eggs moving! I try to take her outside on warmer days but it is still cool most days (today will only get to 55). I have some liquid calcium on order and should arrive today.

I have had a laying bed in there with her for months and hse doesn't even look at it. It is filled with coco-fiber and sand and holds a hole nicely (I have dug my fingers not it.)

Are there other precautions I can take to minimize the possibility of becoming eggbound?

No, not really. If she starts to dig & never lays, or lays & still appears lumpy, you'll have to take her to the vet to have the eggs removed. Some vets might try oxytocin to induce labor, and others will just remove them surgically.
I'm certainly no expert on these, but I do breed veileds. I currently have over 200 babies, 1000 eggs cooking, and about 4 more females gravid. You can e-mail me directly at cricketscritters@charter.net if you want to. I can give you my phone #. Like I said, I'm no expert, but I'll be happy to help you all I can.
