Need some advice!!!! (UTH and setups)

RedQuake Apr 19, 2004 12:28 PM

First, i've got the aft's in the 10 gal now, i took pics, will post them later. In moving the tanks around so they could be away from everyone else, i moved Bubbles tank.

1. i noticed that the UTH was coming off on one corner but its nice and hot.....good thing Bubbles has a good layer of Tiles cause the temps inside are ok, but the bottom was almost to hot for me to touch. Should i continue using that UTH seeing as its come off a bit? I stuck it back on but i'm concerned that it might start to peel off again. (tank is raised, digital thermometer inside says temps are Ok and UTH is on a rheostat).

2. I would like to know if anyone has detailed pics and descriptions of setups that contain a rock/slate/tile and *sand* substrate. I'm not so sure i want to do this in my tanks but i am looking at my options. Also could you tell me how this setup has worked for you, how long you've used it, the weights of your geckos on it and if you've had any trouble with it?

Thanks for the help

If it is too hot to touch, I would unplug immediately. Sounds like you could have a fire hazard. If it is new, then I would check the warranty or return it to the store where you purchased.

I had trouble with a rheostat getting a small wattage UTH below 100F, but that is not too hot for touch. Definitely be careful.

Thanks for the concern. I've kept the uth unplugged and Bubbles is in a new home. I bought it a while ago but i'll check to see if i can return it. Its only really hot on the bottom where its exposed outside of the tank. I didn't put a thermometer to it on the bottom so i don't know exactly what temp it was but yes it was to hot

My first set up was composed of three 8 inch tile and sand for the rest (2x1 foot), i had about 3 zone of 8x2 of sand and i change that to 2 tile of 12 inch square. Now i dont have any sand in the open. I can tell you that i find this to be the best. With my first set up there was always a lot of sand loose on the tile, it was getting everywhere. Now i still have a bit of sand under the tile so they can be well footed.

Thankyou It sounds wonderful. I was planning on buying a diamond saw (?) so i can cut tiles to fit my tanks. It would also be cool to be able to cut bricks and other rocks so i can shape them into interesting setups

Thanks again

A "wet" saw is best for cutting rock/tile.

Matt

Its used for cutting tiles, brick, marble and other non wood materials. It has a water reservoir for wet cutting but will dry cut also. Its on sale this week and since my dad plans on retiling the bathroom and i need it for cutting tiles to shape in my tanks it seems like a good buy

Good deal!!

I'm a geologist and we use those saws (much more power) for cutting slabs.

That sounds like a very cool profession Ive wanted to add rocks/bricks to my tanks but most are way to large. Having the saw will help with that and i can cut out cool shapes. Plus it'll be a nice addition to my tool collection hehehe. My main problem has always been tiles as i haven't found any that fit 10 gal tanks.....this will solve that
