New Here & Question Regarding Gravid Females

geckomojo Apr 19, 2004 02:07 PM

This is my first year breeding leopard geckos and I currently have 17 gravid females. My animals are set up harem style in groups of 1.6. I am curious to know if there is any benefit to separating out gravid females & setting them up in a male-free enclosure, kind of a gecko maternity ward so to speak. Do males bother gravid females at all? Would this allow the males to focus more on females that are not yet gravid, by removing those that already are? Also is it worth it to separate out gravid females so I can know who needs to be beefed back up after they lay eggs?

Any input is appreciated.

Jake

I think you would spetare them to reduce stress in females and male can do it agian. It is best just to have one mate a year.

I am pretty sure that's what Preston meant. And, yes, it is better on the females to keep them seperate.

I always keep my males and females seperate unless they are to be bred. Ive noticed that if my gravid female has a male or cage mate in with her, she wont eat as much, if anything...and it takes much longer for her to lay...due to stress. And all the males do is hog the nest box, which would be pretty annoying if I was a gravid female, lol. Its like my male hogging the good couch with the remote...arghhhh. Men.
