toads and newt together?

Mich2314 Apr 19, 2004 02:13 PM

Hi,
My kids have a california newt (I think!). We've had him for ~4-5 yrs. He likes in a 5 gall tank w/ an island. He eats "newt pellets", dried blood worms, dried shrimp, and the occasional live cricket.
This weekend, they purchased 2 fire-bellied-toads with their allowance(s)... We had planned to have the toads live w/ the newt. Now, I'm not so sure. (The toads are hanging out in a critter keeper 'till we can come up w/ a plan.)

What do you think? Can they live together?

Thanks! Michele

Please don't house them together. There are several reasons why: they might be toxic to each other, given the skin toxins present in each species; your toads are highly likely to bite/eat your newt; they may each carry disease that is benign to their own species, but deadly to another. It's just not worth it.

Thanks for the reply! Since our newt has done so well (alone) for so long, I'll keep it that way. Thanks again!
