Viper boa breeding size?

Sonya Apr 19, 2004 04:43 PM

Anyone have some comparative information on healthy size for C.aspera breeding size. I have a pair now, female from last years April White Plains show from Fair Traders and a male this year from Regal. The male is only 180 grams. The female is obviously older and 340grams. Obviously the male is in quarantine but I thought I would be thinking ahead.

Also, anyone know how seasonal they are? Would introducing them later in the year work well for breeding? Any info would be great.

Hi Sonya!

This is a quote from Jerry Conway's site regarding breeding Solomon Island ground boas, but from my understanding is pretty much the same method for all the Candoia.

Quote Jerry Conway:
Breeding: When kept at 80 degrees year round, your animals will need a 6 – 8 week cooling period to initiate the breeding process. Drop the temperature to around 70 degrees at night and then back to 80 degrees during the day. This should be done in November and December with introduction of animals in early January. Although, not absolutely necessary, I recommend using multiple males to insure breeding success. I have many active breeding males in my collection. I usually introduce two females to a group of four or five males. This stimulates each male to pursue and breed with a female he is compatible with. Certain males will breed several females, but not with all of them. Occasionally a male may only breed with one particular female exclusively. Also of importance, is that female Paulsoni should not be bred in consecutive seasons. If your female produces a litter of babies, give her the next year off.

Hope this helps you out. Unfortunately, there just doesn't seem to be an abundance of information out there on these guys...at least not compared to more commonly kept animals.

As an aside: My first SIGB (a wc male) was purchased from Fair Traders. Great little snake and I've been really happy with him...even when I was pulling my hair out trying to get him to feed! lol

Thanks Raven,
Yes, I had read Jerry's site. Too bad there isn't more out there. I am a record keeper so eventually I guess I will have info. Oh well.
Thankfully the aspera I got was taking mice 'okay' She is a bit on and off but pretty good about eating every 2 weeks. I can always jump start her with a couple of live rat pups. And she took prekilled hopper mice for me last month. I haven't tried to feed the new one yet, that I got from Regal. We will see.
Guess I will keep hunting for info.
