Cedar closets: Are they safe?

BILLY Jun 14, 2003 04:59 PM

Hello everyone!

Me and my wife have been looking at houses recently, and today we found one we will be making an offer on.

All the closets in the house are made of cedar. If I got back into breeding, and wanted to hibernate my breeders in one of the closets, would that be safe for them?

Reason I ask is that I have always heard that cedar shavings are horrible and poisnonous to use as a substrate for your snakes. Would that fact be applicable to a cedar closet? May sound like a dumb question, but I am just trying to be safe and think ahead.

I appreciate all comments. Take care!

I would think it is the oil produced by the shavings, but I am not totally sure. You still staying up in the Dallas area? I am planning on coming up there for some herping this summer. Take care and good luck with the new house (if you decide to get it). Andy

Not a dumb question at all. I wouldn't put the snakes in there.

Not a dumb question at all ,no one noes all the questions. My house is mostly made of cider and pine ,but all are sealed with a polyuratthine [not good at spelling,I'm from NJ]I don't think it would make a difference as long as it was sealed. But I would make sure first.LOL.IMOO.P-RAT

for your clothes, but not safe for your snakes and other living things. Congrats on finding a house that you like enough to make the bid on. Cedar is a resinous wood and can be toxic to animals and other living things. It kills moths that would be bad for your clothes if they can live in the closet. The closet would be worse because there is no ventilation. We don't think of it as much, but cedar can be toxic to babies and infants who may spend the day playing in the closet. Of course, you could spend the first two or three months sleeping in the closet and gives all of us the answer. LOL.
