CORN SNAKE RESPRITORY INFECTION???>>>>>or something else???

cv768 Apr 19, 2004 05:36 PM

Well, our sunglo corn has been making sort of popping and whistling sounds occasionally. I opened her mouth carefully with a rubber ended spoon and there was what seemed to be an excessive amount of saliva...it was kind of bubbley.

Anything I should do before taking a trip to the vet?

It is common this time of year for some snakes to get colds. They have been kept cooler all winter long and their bodies are looking for more warmth. Yes take her to the vet with out a doubt, but for now, overnight, I would provide her a warm spot and raise her humidity. A nice hot misting works great to get a corn breathing easy and a low heat pad under the cage will give her a hot spot to sit on.
Good Luck

My amel corn went through a week or two of what I thought was "sneezing." I got really worried and almost took her to the vet until someone told me that it is most likely something to do with the substrate he's on (too much dust) or too expensive and unpractical to fix through a vet. After changing his substrate he's since stopped sneezing, or if it was an infection it has gone away. I would sit tight, change the substrate, raise his tempature just in case it is a resp infec. and wait to see if his condition worsens if I were you. I had mine on aspen wood shavings and found lots of dust on the bottom of the cage. If you'd like to be 100% sure and have the cash, goto the vet. I was told that corn snakes are pretty hardy animals and not to worry too much and so far I've found this to be good adivce. Hope this helped.

We've got all of our snakes on paper towel for now...eventually we were thinking about aspen shavings.

Not sure about bubbly saliva, as I don't get a look inside their mouths very often. But as you use PT as substrate, I would wonder if it's not just some loose sking in the nostril as he's preparing to shed. If he's not due for a shed, I'd worry about other things...i.e. a vet visit.

No it doesn't appear to be loose skin...I sort of checked after you mentioned it and I can't find anything like that...it does appear to be shedding though so you never know.
