Cham's eyes are swelling/puffing, what does this mean?

azmiris Apr 19, 2004 06:35 PM

My veiled is about 2 years old. In the past, every once and a while his eyes (or eyelids, I should say) would puff up, almost as if they were inflating, to about 2 or 3 times their original size. His eyes stay open and he can move them normally, they are not messy or sticky, just "inflated." Now it is happening very frequently, has anyone seen this happen with theirs? What can be done?

When is your cham doing this? If it's when you mist him it's perfectly normal, they clean their eyes this way. If not, then you should mist him with warm water,(place hot water in the mister- not scalding but hot to the touch- it will come out warm when misted). Mist him for 5-10 minutes, he could be trying to clean some debree out of his eye. It looks pretty scary but it's ok. If it's too often or if you see him rubbing his eye against branches when he's not being misted, then you should take him to the vet just in case, a small laceration could lead to infection. Hope this helps, L*
